Stargazing anyone? Brasília Planetarium is one of the architectural and technological wonders of the Brazilian capital city if not the country. At a first glance (especially from the outside), it may not seem like much, but wait till you get inside… The planetarium is a round room with a hemispherical dome-shaped ceiling. Equipped with slightly sloping armchairs, the facility provides the ideal environment for a unique stargazing experience, allowing visitors to observe the marvelous images displayed on the ceiling.
The state-of-the art projectors create an ‘in like space’ feeling by simulating astronomical phenomena, such as sky mapping, offering a marvelous panorama of the planets, comet stars and other celestial bodies. If you were wondering what the universe looks like or whether or not it is the final frontier, the Brasília Planetarium gives you the opportunity to see for yourself.
Unlike observatories, which have telescopes to enable night time view of the skies, planetariums can show stars and planets even during the day or when the sky is cloudy. The Brasília Planetarium is no exception, with its 12.5 metre wide dome which can comfortably accommodate 80 people per session, including special armchair and wheelchair dedicated space. Projection on the roof is rendered by two devices: the SpaceMaster and the Power Dome VIII, both of which were manufactured in Germany.
The building serves as a scientific, cultural, historical, and entertainment centre, occasionally hosting events, workshops and lectures. The auditorium at the basement of the facility serves this purpose perfectly, while the large space at the mezzanine is suitable for exhibitions.
Special facilities SpaceMaster – in addition to showing the Milky Way, the Solar System in its whole might, the phases of the moon and the constellations, this analog device produced in the 1970s is capable to rebuild the image of the sky of Jerusalem in the time of Jesus Christ. The lenses are still capable of jumping into the future and represent the skies of 2030. The equipment underwent complete upgrading and ‘revitalisation’.
Power Dome VIII – is a digital tool with cutting-edge technology. Designed as a technological upgrade of and complimentary to the SpaceMaster, the Power Dome VIII has eight projectors distributed around the dome and a unique sound system comprising of 12 speakers. The possibilities of this piece of tech are limitless, including immersive, multidisciplinary projections with 3D visual effects. With this device, viewers have a feeling of being ‘immersed’ between the images and the sound of each presentation. This projector is also provided with software for rendering presentations of the universe, such as Uniview and Sky-Control.
