Exactly as its name suggests, Aquario Encantado (‘The Enchanted Aquarium’) is a breathtaking place. One of Brazil’s natural wonders, the natural aquarium is situated in the state of Mato Grosso, Bom Jardim district, 60 km from Nobres. Here, people can survive without mobile phone signal and bank offices. Perfect harmony with nature? Yes.
Simple and humble as this small town may seem with its dusty country roads, Nobres unravels its mind-blowing wonders. The moment you get there you are blown away by the view of the vast lake and palm trees populated by squabbling macaws and colourful, chirping birds. But, this is not all. 700 metres ahead, a mysterious 470-step staircase leads you to the wondrous and enchanted Waterfall of Serra Azul and natural aquarium. For safety reasons, a guide will accompany you as the road ahead can be quite challenging for those of you who are unfamiliar with the sites.
While it takes some good effort to reach the top, once you get there, prepare to be amazed. The pool formed by the waterfall is crystal clear and as the sun goes up towards mid-day, it becomes bluer and bluer as if inviting you to dive. This is it – Aquario Encantado with its mesmerizing shades of blue and turquoise, paradise for dozens of species of fresh water fish. Located in the heart of the forest, the fresh water lake connects to a river and it only reveals the mystery of its name to those who are brave enough to take a dip. Swimming with the fishes, the deeper you go, the more enchanted you feel as if in an aquarium enclosed by blue rocks.
However, this trip does require some sort of underwater swimming skills and special equipment including special sandals, lifesaving equipment and snorkel. The cost of a ticket is R$50 and includes special equipment and guide services.
Generally, the best visiting hours are between 10 am and 1 pm, when the sun goes higher in the sky and gives the lake fascinating blue shades.
