The Church Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis stands in the small old village Kakopetria, just north off the village of Troodos. The church building is the only remains of an old monastery which was established during the 11th century and flourished in the mid-Byzantine period. The monastery has been disestablished after it fell into decline in the 18th century.
The interior of the church is covered with ancient murals dating from the 11th to the 17th century. Due to the later altering of the church, many important paintings were destroyed. However, the church remains one of the most interesting Byzantine churches in Cyprus. Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis Church is open all year round and entrance is free of charge.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday: 09:00 - 16:00 and Sunday: 11:00 - 16:00. On Monday the church is closed.
