In the village of Lagoudera, at the foothills of the Troodos Mountain Range you can visit the Church of Panagia Tou Araka. It is one of ten churches in Cyprus that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The interior of the church is covered in paintings. The paintings are of extraordinary quality and follow the late Comnenian style representing the most complete series of frescoes of the Middle Byzantine period in Cyprus.
Inside the church there are many different scenes including the Pantocrator surrounded by the Preparation of the Throne, the ultimate symbol of The Day of Judgement, and The Angels in medallions. Other scenes include the Nativity, the Descent to Hell, the Baptism, the Ascension, the Presentation and Dormition of the Virgin and a row of Saints finish the iconographic circle.
